Simply email volunteer@mungos.org or call us on 020 3856 6160 for more information.
We advertise new volunteer roles each month. Most roles are advertised for two weeks, so do not forget to get your application in if you see one you are interested in!
As our services are so varied, we have a range of roles that suit a range of skills and experience. If you cannot find a role that you are interested in right now, please do keep checking back.
We currently have volunteering opportunities in projects in London, Bath, Brighton, Bristol, Oxford, and Reading.
Once you have found a role that you are interested in, please click the ‘Apply Now’ button below the advert to complete our online application form.
If you have trouble completing the form, please get in touch at volunteer@mungos.org. Once submitted our team will work to be in touch within ten working days.
Please email volunteer@mungos.org with more details about your request. You can also find further information on our website on how to become a corporate partner.
In the first instance we recommend you email studentplacements@mungos.org, so we can assess whether we are able to accommodate your request.
As all our roles are UK based, we do require our volunteers to be living in the UK with a UK registered address. If you live abroad temporarily or permanently, please speak to us before applying so we can advise you accordingly.
We don’t offer any particular volunteering opportunities around the Christmas holidays because our clients need support all year round. If you are considering getting involved, we would very much appreciate your help and support and we are recruiting for a variety of volunteer roles available online. On our webpages you will find more details about the type of tasks and time commitment required and how to apply online by clicking on the ‘Apply now’ button.
We are recruiting for various micro volunteering opportunities. Being a micro-volunteer at St Mungo’s is an ad hoc, low commitment role which works on a needs/demand basis. This means that when we your support, we will contact you with details and to ask for your availability. Our micro volunteering opportunities require people who can act independently, feel comfortable being on their own or familiarising with briefs/ information at short notice. Currently we are looking for micro volunteers to support us with ad hoc projects in the following areas:
From time to time we recruit for short term volunteering opportunities so please keep checking on our current volunteering opportunities page.
We welcome applications from a wide range of volunteers, including those with criminal records. Having a criminal record does not automatically bar someone from volunteering with us but it will require a discussion so we can understand the context of your convictions and see how we can best support you in your role. Our final decision will depend on the circumstances and background of the offence(s) in relation to the particular volunteer role.
Of course! For most of the roles we offer, we particularly welcome applicants with experience of our services and/or any of the following: homelessness, mental health/physical health/substance use, domestic abuse, history of offending and/or experience of accessing support services.
If there are any restrictions, the opportunity advert will state it. If you are a current St. Mungo’s client, you may want to have a look at our involvement opportunities too.
We may also contact you for a discussion so we can understand how we can best support you in your role.
We will acknowledge receipt, and a member of team will then be in touch within ten working days, to arrange a suitable time to get to know you better. This can be a phone chat to have an informal interview. We may also contact you for any information we require clarification on with regards to your application.
If successful in your application, we will then provide training depending on the role requirements. Most of our roles will require the completion of an online two-hour Core Training session. You will get to learn more about St Mungo’s and how to support people experiencing homelessness.
All volunteers will also have access to your eLearning platform which covers essential information on Health and Safety, GDPR and safeguarding within St. Mungo’s context and ensures that our clients, volunteers, and staff are safe. We do also, offer further training such as role-specific training and development opportunities.
Any volunteer placements are subject to the successful completion of the interview and training, and one satisfactory reference and a DBS being returned.
Wherever possible we will place you in the specific role you have applied for.
However, should there be any delays to completion of the application process, it could be that your preferred role may no longer be available. If this happens, we will communicate with you throughout your volunteer journey and do our best to place you in a similar role and service.
Yes, you will need to provide us with the details of two people that we may contact as referees, to comment on your suitability for volunteering. Although the application form requires details of two referees, we will only need one reference returned for you to begin in your voluntary role. One referee must be someone who knows you in a professional capacity, but not friends or family members. For example: colleagues, managers, tutors, teachers, people you have volunteered with/for, mentors, support workers, religious leaders, probation workers, social workers, job coaches, and clients (if self-employed).
If you are having trouble finding suitable referees, please get in touch and we can discuss the options in more details.
For most of our roles we ask volunteers to do a DBS check (previously called CRB checks). If your role requires a DBS check, we will ask you to disclose any spent and unspent conviction, cautions, reprimands or final warnings when we receive your application, except those which are “protected” as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2013).
This is due to the vulnerability of our clients, and therefore certain roles are exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974. Having a criminal record will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering with St Mungo’s, but some convictions may require further discussion.
If you would like to discuss this in more detail before applying, please email volunteer@mungos.org
This will depend on whether you have signed up for the DBS ‘Update Service’ and what type of check you already have. Please contact us on volunteer@mungos.org about this and we can confirm whether we will be able to use your existing check or not.
